Under the guidance of our Green Engage Committee, InterContinental Hong Kong focuses its environmental initiatives on Waste Recycling & Reduction, Energy Savings, Green Purchasing and Environmental Activities.
The total weight of waste recycled from our hotel in 2016 was over 425,000 kg, representing about 19% of our total garbage. Recycled waste includes glass bottles, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, food waste & even used cooking oil and coffee grinds. We also participate in the FoodLink Foundation, with selected food items donated to help provide nutritious and healthy meals, while also reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
LED lamps are widely used in our guest rooms, corridors and back of house areas. In addition, we have implemented a wide range of energy saving solutions including upgrades to our heating pump and heat recovery system and the use of solar control film.
The hotel uses environmental friendly including FSC (eco-labeled) paper products, bio-degradable plastic bags and low / no VOC paints. Most cleaning products, chemicals and pesticides are bio-degradable. We purchase sustainable seafood and items from local farms.
We organise and participate in numerous activities both within the hotel and the community. In 2016, the hotel launched a "Energy and Water Saving Campaign" for all employees to raise the environmental awareness. Our staff cafeteria regularly features Low Carbon Menus; and we obtain carbon emission offsets for our annual staff party. Annually, we take part in Earth Hour and participate in the Green Power Hike & Tree Planting Challenge.
