The environmental practices of InterContinental Hong Kong have been recognised by EarthCheck; the world’s leading sustainable travel and tourism certification organisation.
EarthCheck is widely regarded as the world’s most scientifically rigorous environmental management Programme, designed specifically for the travel and tourism industry. It looks at key environmental indicators such as energy and water consumption, total waste production, and community commitment to determine an operator’s standard of performance.
In 2009, the hotel was the first in Hong Kong to achieve EarthCheck Silver Certification with its environmental management system fully in place. In July 2011, InterContinental Hong Kong undertook EarthCheck Benchmarking followed by an Onsite Certification Audit conducted by an independent third party Auditor, which resulted in our being awarded the EarthCheck Silver Certification. This provided us with independent confirmation that we were operating according to the highest of international standards and has helped ensure our systems and the technologies we use are in keeping with the latest advances in climate change science and measurement greenhouse gas emissions.
After maintaining EarthCheck Certification for a period of five continuous years (since 2008) which require the hotel successfully benchmarked and certified the operations annually, the hotel will be qualified to achieve EarthCheck Gold Certification in 2013.
InterContinental Hong Kong Environmental Sustainability Policy
InterContinental Hong Kong was the first hotel in Hong Kong and all of Asia to offer CarbonCare Event solutions to its meeting and event customers, in partnership with CarbonCare Asia. Upon request, Carbon Care Asia can provide the hotel’s meeting and event clients with a variety of carbon care solutions and packages --- including a simple event assessment, carbon measurement, suggestions for carbon reduction, plus options of carbon off-set, along with official verification options.
